Frequently Asked Questions

Is snow guaranteed?
Yes! The dog camp is located on a vast snowfield atop the Knik Glacier, ensuring the dog sleds used for this tour have the necessary amount of snow to operate.
How many passengers can fit in the helicopter?
On average, each helicopter can accommodate up to six passengers, though this depends on the aircraft's weight and load capacity. Please contact us before your booking if you wish to book for a group larger than 6.
What should I wear?
For this dog sledding tour, layered clothing is essential for both safety and comfort. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, a sweater, and a waterproof jacket. It's also a good idea to bring gloves, a hat, and sunglasses. High-heeled shoes and sandals are not permitted. We will provide you with overboots that will enable you to traverse the glacier safely; these go over your shoes and fit best with sneakers, but boots work just as well. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery!
How long is this excursion?
The helicopter flight is approximately 15 minutes each way, totaling 30 minutes of aerial sightseeing. The sled dog ride is a two-mile journey, with stops for photo opportunities along the way. You will also spend one hour at the dog camp interacting with the dogs and learning from the mushers.
Will I get to stand and mush the dogsled team?
It's up to you! On this Anchorage sled dog tour, you can choose to stand on the runners and mush your own team of dogs, or you can sit back and relax on the sled while an experienced musher takes the reins. Whichever you choose, you'll be sure to have an unforgettable experience!
What are the transportation options available?
Round-trip transfer shuttles are available at an additional cost. The 10:15 am and 4:30 pm departures offer scheduled transfers from most major anchorage Hotels, as well as the 4th Avenue Visitor Center downtown. These transfers are priced at $59, but if you wish to select a different time, you can opt for a custom transfer shuttle for $98. Alternatively, you can drive yourself to the Knik River Lodge helicopter base, which is approximately one hour away from Anchorage.
What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?
The Knik Valley boasts one of the best climates in Alaska, making flights and dog sled tours rarely subject to cancelation. However, bad weather still happens, and it's impossible to predict when this will happen. If the pilots deem the weather too dangerous, we will do our utmost to reschedule your tour. If you're unwilling to reschedule or we can't find a suitable time, you'll be refunded.
What if I need extra help on the tour?
Please contact us before your booking if you need wheelchair or limited mobility access so that we can discuss your needs. We take great pleasure in adapting to offer this opportunity to those who think they cannot participate in activities like this!
