Rated the #1 activity in Haines on TripAdvisor, the Takshanuk Mountain Trail puts you up close and personal with raw Alaskan wilderness. If you're looking for an activity that is a little more hands-on, then hop out of that bus seat and into a Kawasaki Mule utility vehicle for a tour that climbs 1,500 feet through lush Alaskan forest. With a guide leading the way, you'll pass over meandering mountain streams, cruise past backcountry waterfalls and stop along the way to allow you to enjoy the crisp mountain air and snap lots of photos. You'll certainly want your camera handy when you reach the top of the trail because a magnificent overlook area provides a stunning view of Chilkat Lake and the Upper Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord.

What to expect and what not to expect with this Skagway shore excursion

We put this tour in our 'Off the Beaten Path' category because you'll leave the crowds behind in Skagway and begin the day with a high speed catamaran cruise over to smaller Haines, Alaska. Upon arrival to Haines, you'll transfer to the Takshanuk Mountain trailhead where you will receive a safety orientation and instructions for proper machine use before hitting the trail. As the trail ride begins, immediately you'll be immersed with towering spruce, pines, cedars and the fresh smell of the Alaskan backcountry. A stop at 1100 feet provides a pit-stop at the Rustic Cabin with lemonade, coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies next to a cozy fire (restrooms are available).

  • Based out of Haines, AK - a short ferry ride from Skagway
  • Drive your own Kawasaki Mule or ride as a passenger
  • Informative guided narrative
  • Alaskan halibut and BBQ Chicken lunch at the Rustic Cabin
  • 6 hours duration
  • One of the best-reviewed area tours

Continue climbing, crossing log bridges over mountain streams and all the way enjoying the informative narrative provided by the knowledgeable local guide. A stop at a crystal clear lake provides excellent photo opportunities, and your friends might think you Photoshopped the pictures with the stunning greens from this pristine water. Topping off the journey at 1,500 feet, an overlook brings all the geography of the area together in one panoramic vista. A return stop at the Rustic Cabin provides an impressive lunch of halibut and BBQ chicken - seriously good food! All in all, this tour, ranked 'Tour of the Year' by Princess Cruises in 2008, is a full-day of backcountry adventure that provides all the things that made you want to visit Alaska in the first place.

You've got questions, we've got answers
Q:Are there ATVs available? Can we go off-road?
No, all vehicles are Kawasaki Mule utility vehicles. This is not a high-speed tour and there are no areas to 'open it up' on the trail. It is an off-road trail, but well maintained and always wide enough for the vehicles. Because of switchbacks and steep mountain grades, the speed is always kept at a safe operating level.
Q:What is the minimum age to participate on this tour? Or to drive?
The minimum age to participate on this tour is 5 years old. Drivers must be 21 years or older with a valid driver's license.
Q:What times are the departures?
The departure times for all of our Skagway excursions vary by the day. Complete the information on the sidebar for the most up-to-date availability.
