Ready to get those cruise legs some exercise? A guided hike through the Alaskan rainforest for the active traveler provides a great opportunity to get some energy out, learn about the area, and actually experience the infamous Chilkoot Trail first-hand. The 2-mile, one-way hike culminates at the Taiya River where your raft awaits. From here, begin a peaceful river float down the Taiya as your guide recounts tales of the Gold Rush history and enjoy the surrounding scenery which resonates with Alaskan beauty. This active Skagway shore excursion combines hiking with a gentle float trip and contains all the same history and highlights you find on the various city and bus tours. Get outside, breath some fresh air, and discover why Alaska lured you North to begin with on one of the best combination Skagway tours.

What to expect and what not to expect with this Skagway shore excursion

Starting with a scenic 10-mile drive out to the historic town of Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float begins as your guide narrates the short bus ride which cruises along the northern tip of the Taiya Inlet. It's not uncommon to see eagles and even seals along the journey, and you'll actually pass right by the start of the Chilkoot Trail, which was the notoriously arduous path taken by thousands of prospectors a century ago in hopes of striking it rich in Yukon's interior. The hike begins, meandering through Alaskan rainforest and up the infamous Chilkoot Trail. This hike is geared towards the active traveler and contains moderate elevation gain (about 300 ft. over 2 miles) and natural terrain. Here, the naturalist guide supplements the history with tidbits about this lush, wet ecological zone.

  • Dock-to-dock transportation
  • 4 hours duration, about 40 minutes on the river
  • Wildlife opportunities: seals, eagles, and sea birds
  • Hike a portion of the Chilkoot Trail
  • Great history & scenery
  • Lunch is not included
  • No whitewater or rapids

The hike culminates right at the raft. Climb aboard the sturdy river raft for a peaceful float down the Taiya River, which is fed by high-mountain glacial streams. Depending on the time of year, bald eagles can be prominent, and the surrounding views resonate Alaska's natural outdoor beauty. Enjoy a riverside snack after the float before heading back in to Skagway, where you will still have plenty of time to explore the town or even join another tour.

To add a bicycle trek with this excursion, consider the Skagway Triple Adventure, a great combination! And to stay off the beaten path in Ketchikan, consider the Backcountry Jeep & Canoe Safari

Minimum Ages, Cancellations, Accessibility, Etc.

  • Minimum Age: Please ask us about children 4 years or younger as there is an easier hiking option for younger ones.
  • Accessibility: Participants must be in good physical condition for the 1.5-2 hour hike. Those with back, knee, hip, or balance issues should consider their participation in this activity. Due to safety reasons and keeping on tour schedule, your guide will strongly advise against participation in the hike if they feel it to be too strenuous for your ability level. An alternate arrangement will be made so you can participate in the float portion.
  • Cancellation Policy: In the event your cruise ship is late, delayed, or doesn't make it into port we always issue a full refund for the tour. Changes or cancellations are allowed up to 14 days prior to the tour departure with absolutely no penalty. Including 'Flex Cancel' allows cancellations and refunds up to 24-hours before the tour. Any cancellations made within 14 days of the tour departure (or within 24-hours with Flex Cancel) are nonrefundable.
  • What to Wear: In preparing for Skagway shore excursions, we recommend dressing in layers so that you can add an extra jacket if chilly but remove a layer if needed when the sun comes out. Wear sturdy footwear with good traction and pack a rain jacket just in case. Rain ponchos are provided on the rafting portion if necessary. You are not expected to get wet on the river journey as there is no whitewater on this trip.

You've got questions, we've got answers
Q:How difficult is the hike?
Participants must be in good physical condition for the 1.5-2 hour hike.
Q:What will the weather be like?
One thing that is predictable about Alaskan coastal weather is that the weather can be variable. In the course of the day we can see sun, drizzle, sun, clouds and everything in between. Float tours are never cancelled due to weather as the conditions are typically fleeting. The classic saying is that if you don't like the Skagway weather now, just wait 45 minutes. A sunny, warm day might end up rainy and vice versa.
Q:What's the largest group size?
The maximum group size that the rafts can hold is 11 people.
Q:Will we get wet on the rafting ride?
No, this tour is a scenic and mellow float tour and does not contain any whitewater or rapids. Ponchos can be supplied if there is a drizzle but we recommend bringing your camera along as there is no worries about splashing water.

Great Hike

Yukon Bob was very knowledgable about plants, animals, and the terrain - safety was his #1 thing- after that it was teaching and guiding - our group of 8 all enjoyed the entire day
I would so take a tour with Bob again

Fabulous Hike and Float

I've also rated this adventure on Trip Advisor because Brian our guide was AMAZING! The hike was gorgeous (and steep!), but invigorating to take in the majestic scenery - the float was a blast too. Brian was so knowledgeable and such a great guy! Can't wait to return for the biking portion!

My husband and I enjoyed this excursion very much. The guides, Brooke and Brian, were knowledgeable, helpful, and fun. We were especially appreciative that they both showed such love and respect for the area. The trail hike was not as difficult as we thought it might be. The float was fun! We saw lots of eagles.

Hike & Float Tour

We had a very informative and enjoyable afternoon hiking with your Guide Owen. The trip was a great way to see the Alaska outdoors. However, it does require participants to be in good physical condition in order to complete and enjoy the hiking portion of the trip.

Great Hike

Owen led a great hike on the Chilkoot Trail. He shared oodles of knowledge about the trail as well as the general area of Skagway. The float was fun as well; he navigated nicely!
