It wouldn’t be a proper Yukon Route tour without a stop at stunning Emerald Lake!
It’s well-known that some of the absolute best Alaska shore excursions are those that parallel the gorgeous White Pass Route between Skagway and the unbelievably wild Yukon Territory. This route, which passes alongside inspiring natural features like the crystal-green Emerald Lake and seemingly out-of-place Carcross desert, has been described by many visitors as one of the top road trips in the world, and for good reason! With this variation on the Private Emerald Lake Tour, you’ll have the chance to take in unforgettable scenery between Skagway and Carcross, with stops wherever and whenever you see fit. Moreover, though, you’ll enjoy a customized and scenic hike hand-picked by your personal guide to match your party’s exact goals! You won’t find this exclusive sightseeing tour anywhere else, as it’s not available from the cruise lines! With the Private Emerald Lake & Hiking Tour, you’ll have the opportunity to customize your adventure, helping ensure an exciting and memorable day of exploration! You can be sure though, with postcard-perfect views of whitewater falls, lush green peaks, and old-growth spruce forest, that you’ll be returning to port with photos and memories that will last long after your outing!

What to expect and what not to expect with this Skagway shore excursion

This unique Emerald Lake tour, among the best Alaska shore excursions for visitors fond of history and nature, begins with transport from the place of your choosing in Skagway. And then it’s off into nature! You’ll be traveling along the same path that ambitious Klondike Gold Rushers followed in 1898; can you feel the history? Your driver/ personal guide, a seasoned Alaska expert, will be at your side all day to field any questions you may have en-route to Emerald Lake and the Yukon. Notice something interesting out the window? Pull over and take a look! It’s your tour, after all! On the way to Carcross, your guide will help you to figure out the ideal option for your scenic hike (make sure to bring your camera!). Then, upon arrival in Carcross, you’ll enjoy a historic tour of the odd adventure outpost, including time at Carcross Desert, a dreamscape sea of sand surrounded by mountains and rainforest!

The Private Emerald Lake & Hiking Tour, certainly one of the best Alaska shore excursions for guests that want to do things on their own terms, might just be exactly what your crew is looking for! Looking for a shorter, but also exclusive, Skagway tour? You might want to look into the Private White Pass Summit Tour or Private Extended White Pass Summit Tour.

You've got questions, we've got answers
Q:Is transportation included? Where is the meeting location for this tour?
Round-trip transportation is included with this trip right from your cruise ship. The guides will meet you right at the end of your specific cruise ship and you will be returned to the cruise ship at the end of the tour. If booking online, you will receive a confirmation email and voucher with complete instructions immediately upon booking.
Q:Our ship arrives at 7:00 a.m. - do we have time to make the 7:30 a.m. departure?
Yes! In many ways, the 7:30 a.m. departure is geared towards guests arriving at 7:00 a.m. Just be prepared to disembark early or on time and there shouldn't be any problems joining the 7:30 a.m. departure.
Q:How much is this tour per person?
This tour has no per person rate. It has a base rate of $875.00, regardless of group size, plus an additional $25.00 per person for the dogsledding portion. An additional $140.00 will be levied for groups larger than 8 people to cover a larger vehicle.
Q:How strenuous will the hike be?
Your guide will know several possible hikes and can help you select an option that works for your group, meaning minimally strenous hikes on fairly even terrain are possible.
Q:What should I bring?
Passports are REQUIRED for border crossing into Canada, only 15 miles north of Skagway. For some nationalities, additional documentation may be required. Children accompanying parents should have an original or certified copy of their birth certificate or Passport. If one or both parents are not traveling with the child, a notarized letter of authorization from the absent parent(s) is also necessary to cross into Canada.

Closed-toed tennis shoes or boots are a good idea for the hike. Also bring your camera! Binoculars are optional, as these are provided for you on the tour.
Q:Will we see wildlife?
For wildlife sightings such as bear, moose, mountain goats and others, the Yukon is your best bet. Short of hiring a cousin to dress up in costume, we can not guarantee you’ll see wildlife, and yet, we often do!

Skagway Driving Tour

We hired a car for a six hour tour into the Yukon Territory. Our tour guide, Max, was a wonderful young man who was from Skagway. Max had a very good understanding of the area and showed us everything. We did not see wildlife but the scenery was spectacular. I would recommend this for anyone visiting Skagway. If you can get Max as your tour guide you will have a wonderful experience.

Emerald Lake and Yukon

We so enjoyed our private tour with Max. He was hospitable, friendly, flexible and informative. We felt he went out of his way to be accommodating to our desires and offered suggestions that were helpful. We hope others will secure his services.

Skagway Private Tour

Max was an AWESOME tour guide!! He took our entire family on a private 4hour tour - we wanted to take our time and not be on a set schedule. This tour was perfect! Not only did we have great weather, but Max and his stories were so much fun! Plus - he is a great photographer with a lot of patience (he had to deal with 8 or 9 cameras at several stops!)

Excellent day!

We had such a super day with our tour guide. We explored and saw well beyond what we thought we would. The highlight was the bear and cubs along the side of the road. Thanks for a great day!
